AMD Ryzen 7900 iGPU gets 30%+ higher performance

Skatterbencher known for extreme overclocking attempts, puts AMD’s desktop CPU under a microscope.

The latest review focuses on integrated graphics performance and its optimizations. One should remind our readers that Ryzen 7000 desktop series have tiny RDNA2 GPU component, featuring only 2 Compute Units. This is nowhere enough to deliver gaming experience, yet there is nothing stopping anyone from trying just that.

Skatterbencher test various overclocking strategies that may unleash the full performance of the processor. This involves AMD Precision Boost Overdrive and GFX Curve Optimizer at work. With two methods combined it is possible to unlock the full potential of the processor through higher voltages.

The stock iGPU configuration offers 2.2 GHz clock speed at around 0.997 volts with Furmark software. Just as important is the memory clock, which in this case is 2.4 GHz. With such a setting, the CPU’s GPU and SOC (separate die on the package) consume around 38.5 watts. With manual overclocking, he was able to overclock the iGPU to 2949 MHz clocks at 1.2V, that also increase the power consumption to 63.5 watts. At the same time, memory clock was adjusted to 3.2 GHz.

By further adjusting the GFX voltage/frequency curvature, the GPU clock has increased to 3.1 GHz at 1.395 volts. Meanwhile, the temperature reached 52.8°C from stock 38.4°C, while SOC power has been reported at 60.7 watts, so a bit lower than before.

Depending on a workload, SkatterBencher reports up to 41.67% performance improvement in a game such as Tomb Raider at 1080p resolution. It is still not a playable experience, though. What is worth noting though is that with iGPU OC, he was finally able to run raytracing benchmark, which was rendered impossible with stock settings.

The true irony is overclocking experience of integrated RDNA2 graphics is much better experience than discrete models, concludes the reviewer. AMD Dragon Range mobile CPUs will also feature such an iGPU, but it will likely be more complicated to overclock than desktop variants.
